How to Change the Oil in a 1997 Kia Sportage
- 1). Wedge portable vehicle service ramps in front of each of the Kia Sportage's tires. Drive the vehicle up the ramp and secure it into place by engaging the emergency brake. Outside the Kia, wedge wheel chocks behind each tire.
- 2). Lay on a creeper tray and slide yourself beneath the Kia. Place a waste oil container below the Kia's oil tank. Loosen the oil pan's drain plug with a socket wrench, then twist it completely off by hand.
- 3). Allow the old oil to pour completely out of the Kia and into the waste oil container. This will be the longest part of the process.
- 4). Wipe the oil tanks drain opening down with a clean shop towel. Work the towel into the drain opening and clean out the screw threads as well. Replace the drain plug.
- 5). Slide the waste oil container to the Kia Sportage's oil filter mounting base. Partially remove the oil filter using an oil filter wrench. Do not unscrew the filter all the way. Oil in the system above the filter will flow out and into the waste oil container. Wait for all the oil to drain out.
- 6). Finish unscrewing the old oil filter with your finger tips. Once the filter detaches from the Kia's mounting base, dump the oil in the filter into your waste oil container. Glance at the filter and then at the filter mounting base. Ensure the filter's gasket came off with the filter. If not, pick the gasket off of the mounting base.
- 7). Wipe down the Kia Sportage's oil filter mounting base with a clean shop towel. Work the towel into the base's screw threads as well.
- 8). Coat the top of your replacement oil filter with new motor oil. Work the motor oil into the filter's screw threads, and then twist the new filter onto the mounting base. Do not tighten the new filter with the filter wrench. That would risk stripping the mounting base and having the filter stuck in place.
- 9). Slide out from under the Kia. Open the hood and remove the Kia's oil dipstick. Wipe it dry with a clean shop towel.
- 10
Remove the oil filler cap near the dipstick and add five quarts of motor oil (See Tips). You should use a funnel to ensure all the oil gets into the tank and not onto other engine components. - 11
Reinsert the dipstick and then remove it. Check the oil level and top off as needed. - 12
Replace the dipstick. Close the Kia's hood, and remove the chocks from behind the tires. Drive the Kia Sportage off of the portable service ramps.
