How to Replace a Head Gasket on a 1993 Grand Am
- 1). Lift up the hood of your Grand Am and locate the battery. Use a wrench to unscrew the bolt clamp which is fixed around the negative battery terminal. Pull the negative cable away from the terminal.
- 2). Locate the drain plug at the very bottom of the radiator. Move the drain pan directly underneath the plug and pull the plug out of the radiator. Drain the coolant from the radiator in to the pan. Once the radiator is empty reattach the drain plug.
- 3). Pull the air intake hose and coolant lines carefully from their respective clamps and remove them from the engine. This can be done by hand.
- 4). Begin removing the bolts attached to the head gasket with a wrench. Start by removing the bolt furthest left and work your way around. Keep track of which hole you removed each bolt from, becaue you will need to reattach them in exactly the same holes. Lift the head gasket away from the engine.
- 5). Place the new head gasket onto the engine block. Reattach the mounting bolts in exactly the same holes from which you removed them. Reattach the hoses to their respective connectors and secure in place with the clamps. Lift the cap off the radiator and pour coolant back in to the radiator. Place the negative cable back on to the battery terminal and secure in place with the terminal bolt.
