    • 1). Buy toe rod ends for your Subaru Outback. Make sure you get the ones that are specific for your vehicle as they vary from model year to model year.

    • 2). Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, then jack up your Outback. Support it on jack stands, then remove the wheels.

    • 3). Remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end with a pair of pliers, and remove the nut. With a tie rod separator or puller, separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.

    • 4). Unscrew the tie rod end, keeping track of the number of turns you have to make before it comes off. Write this number down.

    • 5). Screw on the new tie rod end, making sure you do it in the same number of turns it took to remove it. Put on a replacement nut (comes with the tie rod end), and tighten it to 31 to 44 foot pounds. Slip in the new cotter pin (also comes with tie rod end), and repeat the steps for the other tie rod end.

    • 6). Put back on the tires, and tighten the lug nuts to 95 to 100 foot pounds. Get your Subaru Outback aligned.
