How to Winterize a Mercury Jet Outboard
- 1). Connect a garden hose to your motor, screwing it into the flushing port of the motor located just under the front, starboard side of the motor cowling. Turn the garden hose on full force.
- 2). Disconnect the fuel line from your carburetor. Start the motor and spray fogging oil into the throat of the carburetor until the motor chokes out. Turn the ignition off. Set a small container beneath the carburetor's float bowl.
- 3). Pull the hose from the bottom of the float bowl and position is end in the container. Use a Phillips screwdriver to open the float bowl's drain plug and allow the fuel to drain. Close the plug.
- 4). Remove the spark plugs from the motor with a spark plug wrench. Spray fogging oil into the spark plug bores, and bump the starter. Spray more fogging oil into the bores and bump the starter again. Replace the spark plugs.
- 5). Keep the motor vertical until all the water has drained from it. While the motor drains, inspect the jet drive's reverse gate and its pivot points for debris and damage. Check the swinging action of the gate to ensure it moves freely.
- 6). Inspect the slats of the water intake grille for straightness. Replace the grille if a slat is missing, bent or broken.
- 7). Store the motor so that it remains vertical for the term of its storage.
