One of the most prominent landmarks in the city of Colombo is Independence Square, located in Cinnamon Gardens, one of the most prominent addresses in the city. As the name suggests, it was built to celebrate Sri Lanka's sovereignty from British rule on February 4th 1948.

The Memorial Hall itself was built a few years after the country gained independence. Keeping in line with ancient local architectural styles, the Hall was constructed to resemble an audience hall of one of the native Kingdoms known as Kandy. Although it is completely made out of concrete, the architecture is distinctively Sri Lankan and very elegantly built.
At the head of the Independence Memorial Hall, a statue of Sri Lanka's first President, the Honorable Don Stephan Senenayake is placed. He is known as the "father of the nation" and given pride of place at this Square.

One of the features one immediately notices is the row of impressive stone lions that guard this grand monument along with the "pots of plenty" that adorn the Hall. There is also a small Independence Museum where one can see pictures and information about Sri Lanka's fight for independence. The National Museum is also located close by if one requires further information.
Over the years, Independence Square and the Memorial Hall has been the site of many national, cultural and the important celebrations. It is also now commonly used as a recreational ground, with special pedestrian areas, where one can park and walk or jog. There are bike trails along with wide spaces where children run and play. This area is kept very neatly and the paths are lit at night.

Revel in the legends of colonial history and enjoy the ultimate holiday in Sri Lanka's urban metropolitan. travel to Colombo, the country's commercial capital and be rewarded with scenic skylines, beautiful cityscapes and be a part of the typical hustle and bustle of the city. You can hire a car from the hotel, take one of the Inter-City buses or take the train from the city centre to nearby towns and villages just outside the city boundaries.
