How to Put a Hitch on a GMC Safari

    • 1). Lift up the vehicle using the jack and place it on jack stands. Make sure the vehicle is secure before you crawl underneath it.

    • 2). Unbolt the bumper brackets from the rear of the frame using an open-end wrench and a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Do this on both sides since the hitch will bolt in its place.

    • 3). Spray the penetrating oil into the threaded bolt hole just behind the bumper brackets and inside of the rear leaf spring hangers. Rub the wire brush in the hole to loosen up any rust that may be in there.

    • 4). Lift the hitch under the bumper with the help of an assistant, and loosely bolt it into the bumper using the hardware provided with the kit and your hands. This will allow you to pivot the hitch up and loosely bolt in the other bolts from the bumper forward as well.

    • 5). Torque down all of the hardware using the torque wrench, extension and sockets. Then raise the vehicle off of the jack stands using the jack and place it back on the ground.
