How to Replace the Alternator in a Toyota Paseo

    Removing the Alternator

    • 1). Park your car in a safe and level surface.

    • 2). Disconnect the negative (black) battery cable using a wrench.

    • 3). Raise the front of your Paseo vehicle, if you need to reach the lower alternator-mounting bolts. Release the parking brake, then use a floor jack to raise it and support it on two jack stands.

    • 4). Chock the rear wheels.

    • 5). Loosen the alternator nut, pivot and lock bolts using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

    • 6). Loosen the adjusting bolt to release the tension on the drive belt using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

    • 7). Remove the drive belt from the engine.

    • 8). Unplug the wiring harness connector from the back of the alternator.

    • 9). Detach the wiring harness from the retaining clips by hand, if your Paseo model is equipped with them.

      Disconnect the electrical wire from the back of the alternator using a wrench.

      Ask a helper to hold the alternator in place as you finish removing the nut, pivot and lock bolts from the alternator. Then remove the alternator from the vehicle.

    Installing the New Alternator

    • 1). Set the new alternator in place and ask your helper to hold it in its mounting bracket as you install the nut, pivot and lock bolts finger tight.

    • 2). Connect the electrical wire to the back of the alternator using the wrench.

    • 3). Attach the wiring harness to the retaining clips by hand, if your Paseo model is equipped with them.

    • 4). Plug the wiring harness connector to the back of the alternator.

    • 5). Route the drive belt over the alternator pulley and the rest of the pulleys.

    • 6). Tighten the adjusting bolt to provide the proper tension to the drive belt using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

    • 7). Tighten the alternator nut, pivot and lock bolts using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

    • 8). Lower your vehicle, if you had to raise it.

    • 9). Connect the negative (black) battery cable using the wrench.

      Start the engine and make sure the alternator and drive belt work properly.
