How to Install a Starter for a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

    • 1). Find the negative battery cable end on the battery of your Cavalier. Loosen the retaining bolt from the cable end with a wrench, then remove the cable from the battery. Isolate the cable from the battery while you are working on the starter.

    • 2). Locate the starter between the front of the car and the engine compartment. Remove the wiring-harness connector from the "S" terminal with a wrench and push the wires aside. Locate the battery cable running to the starter. Remove the battery cable from the "B" terminal on the starter using a wrench and push this wire aside as well.

    • 3). Remove the two mounting bolts from the starter using a socket and ratchet, then slide the starter out of the hole in the bell housing. Lift the starter out of the engine compartment and set it aside.

    • 4). Lower a new starter into the engine compartment and slide the nose cone on the starter into the hole in the bell housing. Install the two mounting bolts into the new starter and tighten them to 66 ft-lbs. with a torque wrench.

    • 5). Install the battery cable onto the "B" terminal. Install the retaining nut and tighten it with a wrench. Plug the wiring-harness connector into the "S" terminal on the solenoid. Make sure the locking tabs snap into place.

    • 6). Install the negative battery cable end on the battery terminal and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench.
