Excelsior College Center for Professional Development and Post-9/11 Benefits
With nearly 40 years of experience educating adult learners, Albany, New York-based Excelsior College reaches far beyond the state, with 85% of enrolled students living outside New York. Excelsior, the largest educator of nursing students via distance learning, provides online professional development for a variety of adult learners, including a cluster of military-related students in the Center for Professional Development.
Many of these students use Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to attend the college.
Typical Student Using GI Bill Benefits
Susan M. Kryczka, executive director of the Center for Professional Development at Excelsior College, notes that "currently, the majority of our students are either active duty military, veterans, or military spouses. We also serve civilians. Most students are looking to gain a certificate in a new skill area so that they can be better prepared for a job or increase their skill level for the job they already hold."
Veterans benefits, from the traditional Montgomery GI Bill to the new Post-9/11 GI Bill, help active-duty, reserve, national guard and dependents of veterans to achieve education goals, from occupational training to earning an associate degree, bachelor's degree, or a graduate certificate or degree.
What Do Veterans Benefits Cover?
Each veteran receives a different level of eligibility and benefits depending on time of service, combat duty, service-connected disability and other factors.
Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits range from 40% of full program offerings to 100% of benefits, so each serviceperson needs to contact the Veterans Affairs office to determine financial amounts.
The VA GI Bill offers up to $41 per credit hour for books, and book allowance money is sent directly to the student. Tuition and fee payments go directly to Excelsior College, and for students enrolled at 50% or more (half time or more), the Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) is sent directly to the student for living expenses during school. Contact Excelsior College for more details on costs using the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Why Do So Many Military Members and Veterans Attend Continuing Education Courses?
"Convenience, portability, and accessibility," says Kryczka. "Our courses are open enrollment and students can start at anytime--there is no need to wait for a semester to start. Students can access coursework wherever they are--overseas, at home, on the road or the office. They can go through the material as quickly as they want and work around their work or personal schedules. They have access to course facilitators who will answers all their questions. They can prepare for national certifications which will qualify them for jobs in any part of the country."
