How to Replace the Belt on a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix
- 1). Open the hood and look for the serpentine belt routing diagram on the top of the plastic fan shroud. The diagram is a sticker that has the exact routing process of the belt around each accessory pulley. Refer to this diagram to properly put the new belt around the accessory pulleys.
- 2). Look on the front of the engine and locate the self adjusting belt tensioner. The exact location of the belt tensioner is on the lower left hand side of the alternator. The tensioner has a free moving pulley attached to the bottom of the tensioner. The tensioner can be rotated from the bolt head in the middle of the pulley.
- 3). Position the socket and breaker bar onto the pulley bolt head. Turn the breaker bar in a counter clockwise motion to relieve the tension from the belt. Then, pull the belt out from under the tensioner pulley. Slowly let the tensioner retract until it stops. Pull the breaker bar and socket off of the tensioner pulley.
- 4). Remove the belt from all of the accessory pulleys and out of the engine area. Match the new belt to the old belt to ensure that the new belt is the proper size.
- 5). Slide the new belt around the crankshaft pulley on the bottom of the engine first. Then, refer to the belt routing diagram to properly route the new belt around the other pulleys.
- 6). Position the socket and breaker bar back onto the pulley bolt head. Rotate the breaker bar clockwise to move the tensioner. Then, slide the new belt underneath the tensioner pulley. Slowly release the breaker bar and as the self adjusting tensioner is retracting, the tensioner pulley will tighten the belt.
- 7). Inspect the belt very good to ensure that it is routed correctly and that it is inside of each pulley. Then, crank the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix for ten seconds so that the ridges on the new belt can be completely seated inside of the grooves of the accessory pulleys.
- 8). Turn the motor off and close the hood.
