Step-by-Step Removal of the Front Wheel Hub on a 1996 GS 300
- 1). Block the rear wheels with the wheel chocks and apply the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel from which the hub is being removed, using a lug wrench. Raise the front wheel using the floor jack and place a jack stand under the front-lower edge of the pinch weld on the bottom of the rocker panel of the car. Remove the lug nuts and lay the wheel aside.
- 2). Remove the cotter pin from the castellated spacer over the axle nut using a pair of wire cutters and slide the spacer off the nut. Remove the axle-nut using a 36 mm axle nut socket and a breaker bar.
- 3). Remove the two 17 mm bolts that attach the brake caliper bracket to the back of the steering knuckle using a 17 mm socket and ratchet. Lift the caliper off the brake rotor and hang it from the front strut using a piece of heavy wire.
- 4). Bolt the puller flange of the slide hammer to three of the lug studs using the lug nuts that hold the wheel on. Tighten the nuts securely with a 21 mm wrench. Grasp the T-handle on the end of the slide hammer firmly. Slide the weight of the slide hammer forward on the shaft and pull it backward sharply against the stop. Repeat this as many times as necessary to pull the hub from the bearing.
