How to Troubleshoot a Nissan Maxima Engine Idling Problem

    • 1). Check to see if your engine is idling too low or frequently stalling. This can happen at any time when you let your foot off the gas pedal. To correct this problem, turn the adjustment screw on the throttle cable clockwise to put tension on the cable; the idle speed will increase and prevent the Maxima from stalling.

    • 2). Check to see if your idle speed is too high. The idle speed for the Maxima should be around 800 rpms. If it is significantly higher than this at normal operating temperatures, adjust the adjustment screw of the throttle cable counterclockwise.

    • 3). Check to see if your transaxle is clicking at idle. Even if your Maxima is not stalling, it is still suffering from a low idle speed. Tighten the cable to the proper engine idle speed.
