Maple

• Maple is one of the most abundant hardwoods in North American forests. The need for quick and affordable housing after World War II made the economical hardwood a natural choice for flooring. The use of maple also coincided with the blond wood trend that was popular in the 1950s and '60s. Because of their durability, many decades-old maple floors are still in good condition with plenty of decades -- or centuries -- left in them.
  
  

Color

• At first coated with old-fashioned varnish that yellows over time, maple floors took on yellow and orange tones as they aged. The tight grain was usually discreet, but some boards with shimmering curly or bird's-eye figuring might be found scattered throughout the room. Many modern homeowners appreciate the durability and clear grain of maple, but find the blond and orange colors a bit dated for their tastes.
  
  

Stain

• Remember that the names given to stain colors are merely names. Any color can be applied to any wood, according to your preference. So-called oak stains tend to be in shades of amber, from light to dark. Test your stains on scrap wood or an inconspicuous area of the floor. Test the colors that interest you. If you start with a medium stain, you can add darker or lighter stains to adjust the color. Don't be afraid to try colors that have the names of other woods, such as brown walnut, red mahogany and yellow pine.
  
  

Tips

• If the maple doesn't absorb stain evenly or becomes splotchy, you'll have to use a sanding sealer or thinned shellac to assure more even coverage. Apply and use stains according to product instructions, then apply a clear finish. Remember that old-fashioned varnishes and oil-based polyurethanes yellow over time and will darken the floor's color. Water-based polyurethane is an easy-to-use option that stays clear and doesn't discolor over time.
