How to Replace a Neutral Safety Switch on a 1992 Firebird
- 1). Park the Firebird on a level, paved surface. Set the parking brake.
- 2). Disconnect the negative battery cable using a ratchet and socket.
- 3). Move the shifter to "neutral." Use a slotted screwdriver to pry the clip from the bottom of the shifter knob, and remove the knob.
- 4). Open the console compartment door; use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw that secures the shifter plate to the console. Lift up the plate and unplug the electrical connectors, noting their positions for installation. Remove the plate.
- 5). Remove the two screws from each side of the console using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the console.
- 6). Unplug the electrical connector from the neutral safety switch, located on the passenger's side of the shifter. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the two bolts that attach the switch to the shifter. Remove the switch. Note that the switch has a tab that fits into a slot on the shifter.
- 7). Mount the new switch on to the shifter with the tab in the slot. Install and tighten the bolts
- 8). Plug in the electrical connector to the switch. Replace the console and install the screws. Lower the shifter plate onto the console and reattach the electrical connectors. Install the screw that holds the shifter plate to the console. Set the shift knob on the end of the shifter and install the clip. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
