Maintaining a healthy blood pH level is integral to supporting the normal function of many of your body systems. The pH scale ranges from zero, representing highly acidic, to 14, representing highly alkaline. Blood tends to be slightly alkaline, and you should maintain blood pH at approximately 7.4. Certain foods can create temporary disruptions in your blood pH to make your blood more alkaline than normal or lower the acidity levels of your blood.

    Fruits

    • Most fruits produce an alkaline reaction in your body even if those fruits demonstrate an acidic pH before consumption. Fruits and fruit juices like lemons and orange juice are acidic before you eat them, but they produce an alkaline reaction as your body digests them. Fruits such as watermelon, bananas, peaches and avocados are particularly alkaline fruits that present high alkalinity before and after digestion. Dried fruits like raisins and dried figs are also considered alkaline-producing fruits. The few exceptions to alkaline fruits include plums, prunes and cranberries, which are acidic fruits and tip the balance of your blood pH toward the acidic end of the spectrum.

    Vegetables

    • Like fruits, most vegetables produce alkaline reactions in your body, with the exception of a handful of vegetables like corn and asparagus. Leafy green vegetables like spinach, Swiss chard, kale, lettuce and escarole have some of the highest alkalinity ratings of all vegetables. Even starchy vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes result in raised alkalinity in your body. Mushrooms, cabbage, eggplant, okra and brussel sprouts are also effective at producing alkaline reactions, though to a lesser extent than their leafy counterparts.

    Grains and Nuts

    • Grains and nuts vary widely in their ability to produce an alkaline reaction in the body. Some nuts, such as cashews, Brazil nuts, pecans and walnuts, are slightly acidic and cause acidic reactions in the body, but fresh coconut, almonds and pine nuts have the opposite effect and can cause alkaline reactions in the body. Seeds like sunflower, pumpkin and flax also have alkaline effects. Soybeans and green peas are also alkaline, but many other grains are acidic or neutral.
