    • 1). Attach the end of a garden hose to the motor flush muffs. Attach the flush muffs to the water inlets that are on the motor. Turn on the water to allow it to flow into the motor.

    • 2). Release the latches that are used to secure the motor cover. Pull it forward and remove it from the motor.

    • 3). Locate the "Number 1" spark plug lead and attach the timing light.

    • 4). Start the motor by using the ignition or pulling the starter rope. Move the shift lever to the "Forward" position. Allow the motor to warm up for three to five minutes.

    • 5). View the timing light to see the motor's timing. The timing needs to be between 7 and 9 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).

    • 6). Locate the trigger link rod connected to the ball stud. Disconnect the socket from the ball stud to adjust the link rod. Shorten the link rod to increase the timing. Re-attach the socket to the ball stud.

    • 7). Open and close the throttle at least three times to allow the speed of the engine to normalize.

    • 8). View the timing light to see the motor's timing. If the timing is still off, re-adjust the link rod.
