How to Change the Starter on a 1997 Ford F-150

    • 1). Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a wrench to loosen the nut. Place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.

    • 2). Jack the truck on the driver's side, and place a jack stand under the frame near the jacking point. Raise the jack stand to the frame of the truck.

    • 3). Crawl under the truck, and locate the starter. Remove the cover from the starter wires. Mark each wire with a marker and masking tape, indicating correct placement for each. Disconnect the wires from the starter, using a wrench to remove the nuts and pulling the wires off of the starter. Unplug the wiring harness from the solenoid.

    • 4). Remove the starter mounting bolts, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the starter away from the engine.

    • 5). Place the new starter in the engine and tighten the bolts up with the socket and ratchet. Reconnect the starter wires, and tighten the nuts with the wrench. Plug the wiring harness, and replace the wire cover on the starter.

    • 6). Remove the jack stand from under the truck, and lower the truck to the ground.

    • 7). Reconnect the negative battery terminal, and tighten the nut.
