Removing a Jeep YJ Transfer Case
- 1). Sit in the driver's seat. Shift the four-wheel drive shifter into the 4H position with your hands. Lift the Jeep YJ with the jack and put it on a set of four jack stands. Put the drain pan under the transfer case.
- 2). Open the drain plug on the bottom of the transfer case and let the case empty out fluid into the drain pan. Unbolt the rear driveshaft from the transfer case with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then take it off of the transmission. Unbolt the front driveshaft from the transfer case with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then take it off of the transfer case.
- 3). Remove the speedometer cable from the transfer case with an open-end wrench. Remove the vacuum lines and the vent hose from the case by pulling them off with your hands. Slide the jack underneath the transfer case and lift it up until it touches the transmission.
- 4). Unbolt the rear crossmember from the transfer case with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench, then remove the crossmember from the frame. Locate the shift linkage, which runs from the transfer case to the underside of the Jeep by the shifter on the interior. Unbolt the linkage from the case with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench.
- 5). Relocate the jack to the transfer case to support the weight of the case. Unbolt the transfer case from the transmission with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then slide the jack back and lower it down. Take the transfer case out from the underside of the Jeep.
