How to Replace Hood Shocks

    • 1). Open the hood of the vehicle and secure it with the prop rod. Locate the hood shocks; they will be near the hinges. They are 1 to 1 1/2 feet long when completely extended. See resource number 1 for a picture.

    • 2). Examine both ends of the hood shock; look for the small metal clips that hold either end of the shock onto the hood and the body of the vehicle.

    • 3). Pry the metal clips from either end of the hood shock with the screwdriver. They will pop out when they have released.

    • 4). Remove the shock by pulling it away from each mounting point.

    • 5). Place the bottom socket of the new shock on the bottom mount on the vehicle and press the retaining clip in until it snaps in place. Test the firmness of the connection by pulling the shock.

    • 6). Press the upper mount of the shock onto the mount on the hood; you may need to lift up on the hood slightly to connect it to the mount. Press the retaining clip until it snaps into place. Test the connection by pulling on the shock.

    • 7). Repeat steps 2 through 6 for the strut on the other side, if applicable.
