How to Change a 2005 Saturn LS 300 Engine Filter

    • 1). Park your 2005 Saturn LS 300 on a level surface, engage the emergency brake, and use car jacks to raise the front of the vehicle up. You could also drive the vehicle onto car ramps if this is your preference. Turn the engine off and open the hood.

    • 2). Position yourself on the underside of the engine and look about half way back from the bumper to find the engine oil pan. You will find the oil drain plug on this oil pan.

    • 3). Place a drip pan below this area and remove the drain plug in a counterclockwise direction to allow the oil to drain into the pan. Reposition the drip pan if necessary to catch the oil. Allow the oil to drain thoroughly until it stops dripping completely and then put the plug back into position clockwise until snug.

    • 4). Find the hexagon shaped oil filter cover that is located at the back left of the engine and position the drip pan below it. Fasten an oil filter wrench around the outer perimeter of this oil filter cover and rotate it counterclockwise to remove it. Tip the filter cover over on the drip pan, allow it to drain, and remove the filter from the filter cover.

    • 5). Grab the new oil filter, place it in the filter cover, and put a new O-ring on the filter cover’s screw threads. Put a bit of fresh engine oil on your finger and rub the oil on the O-ring.

    • 6). Situate the new filter in place and tighten in a clockwise direction until snug. You can do this with your hands or with the use of the oil filter wrench. You do not want to over-tighten the new filter since it may strip the threads and make it difficult to remove upon the next filter change.

    • 7). Stand up and look for the oil fill cap in the middle of the engine compartment. It is labeled. Remove the cap and pour 4 quarts of oil into the fill hole.

    • 8). Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes to let the new oil circulate through the engine. Look below the engine to make sure there are no leaks.

    • 9). Find the yellow looped oil dipstick on the front left side of the engine compartment. Check the oil level by pulling the dipstick out, wipe the oil off with a rag, dip it back into the dip hole, and pull it out to look at the oil level.

Add more oil in small amounts until it reads between the two lines that are on the dipstick. It will most likely take all 5 quarts of oil that you purchased, but there may have been some residual oil that did not drain out of the engine. That is why you add the oil is small amounts, so you do not overfill it.

Put the dipstick back in place when it is at the appropriate level and shut the hood of the car. Discard of the used oil by taking it to the auto parts store where you bought your filter parts so they can recycle it.
