How to Remove a Two Barrel Carburetor on an '88 Dodge Dakota
- 1). Remove the air cleaner bolts in the vertical support brackets using a wrench. Remove the throttle support bracket on the valve cover using a socket. Bring the throttle cable toward the carburetor to create some slack in the cable. Remove the throttle cable ball from the carburetor linkage.
- 2). Pull off the distributor vacuum line at the base of the carburetor. Remove the power booster vacuum hose at the base of the carburetor. Remove the fuel inlet line using a wrench.
- 3). Disconnect the electric connector on the choke by pulling it off. Remove the four nuts securing the carburetor to the intake manifold using a wrench. Lift the carburetor off the intake manifold. Remove the base gasket under the carburetor, followed by the heat isolator block and the gasket beneath it. Make sure that no debris falls into the intake manifold when you remove the carburetor. Place a rag in the opening and clean off any remaining gasket material with a screwdriver or gasket scraper.
- 4). Place one of the thin gaskets over the studs, followed by the heat isolator block. Cap the heat isolator block with another thin gasket. Install the carburetor over the studs and install the nuts. Tighten the nuts, staggering the sequence. The nuts only need to be snug. Any excess torque will crack the heat isolator block.
- 5). Install the throttle cable ball in the throttle linkage and bolt the support bracket to the valve cover. Push the small distributor advance vacuum hose on the base port and the power brake booster hose next to it on the larger port.
- 6). Wrap some teflon tape on the fuel line connector threads. Thread the fuel line connector into the inlet port of the carburetor by hand to start with so it does not get cross-threaded, then tighten it with a wrench until it is snug. Plug in the electric choke wire connector. Install the air cleaner and tighten the bolts.
