Flowing Streams: Naturalness & Wuwei

106 3
From Zen Word, Zen Calligraphy by Eido Tai Shimano & Kogestsu Tani, a passage which resonates clearly with the Taoist notion of wuwei:

***

Flowing streams do not compete with one another

Ryusui Saki O Arasowazu

This saying is a saying of naturalness. The streams do not say, “Go ahead” of “After you.” They flow naturally, just naturally. But when we look at human life, there is much competition and there are many competitive dramas, so this phrase is a teaching of how important it is for us to be natural.

Three is a similar saying in the Zen tradition that goes:

However quick the stream may be, It does not carry away the reflection of the moon.

Water is water, moon is moon, well balanced and in tune with one another -- that is nature.
