How to Have a Successful Prayer Ministry
- 1). Provide a smooth way to confidentially funnel prayer requests to the leaders of the prayer ministry. This could include providing a card with a spot for prayer requests on a congregation's weekly bulletin or providing an enclosed drop box located in one central location for congregants to deposit requests. A phone number for people to call could also be provided.
- 2). Meet regularly with the rest of the prayer team and provide short lessons on the topic of prayer and why it is important. Include time to share prayer requests and known answers to prayer with the rest of the prayer group.
- 3). Designate more than one person as leadership for the prayer ministry so that a leader can always be available if one person becomes ill or otherwise cannot carry out the duties of leadership from time to time. Designate an "on-call" person who can accept phone calls 24/7 and consider rotating this responsibility between willing volunteers.
- 4). Communicate regularly with church leadership or a senior pastor if applicable. Invite these individuals to attend one or more prayer ministry meetings and allow them to offer tips or suggestions to keep things running smoothly.
- 5). Recruit new members to the prayer ministry to replace members who will eventually leave the group by placing fliers in strategic locations for congregants to view. If you have a website, place an announcement on the website of your organization, inviting individuals to join the ministry.
- 6). Stress the importance of personal prayer time outside of prayer ministry meetings, as this can foster an individual's personal faith and potentially make a difference for those she is praying for. Stress the importance of keeping confidentiality amongst the prayer ministry members when handling and discussing prayer requests.
