How to Dry a Cold Patch on Blacktop
- 1). Clean the damaged area. Chisel out any loose blacktop and scrub the entire damaged area with a wire brush to remove loose debris. Spray the area with a hose to remove remaining dust. Allow all standing water to dry before continuing; it is OK if the blacktop is slightly damp.
- 2). Spread cold patch material into the damaged area with a flat trowel. Fill the area until the crack or hole is flush with the surrounding blacktop. Use the flat edge of the trowel to smooth over the patch. Tamp the patch down with a hand damper to secure everything in place.
- 3). Cover the patch with clear plastic or lay a piece of wood on top to protect the patch from rain or wind.
- 4). Check the patch 24 hours after application. The patch must be completely firm to the touch. Prod the patch gently with a gloved finger or a trowel. If the material is still pliable, allow more time to dry.
- 5). Seal the patch once the material is completely solid. Apply concrete or asphalt sealant with a paint roller or push broom to ensure the patch will stay resilient. If necessary, cover the sealant as you did the patch to allow it to dry undisturbed for at least 24 hours.
