Spider Sprays & Spider Repellents
- Contact insecticides can be sprayed on spiders you observe and on spider webs. Insecticides approved for spider control typically contain pyrethrins, resmethrin, allethrin or some combination thereof as their active chemical ingredients. A major limitation of controlling spiders with contact sprays, however, is that spiders tend to prefer secluded and covered areas and it can therefore be difficult to reach spiders living in these areas with a contact spray.
- Total release fogger aerosol sprays, sometimes called "bombs," can be effective at controlling large infestations of spiders. If there is a large number of spider living inside your home, spraying with contact insecticides can be inefficient, ineffective and unnecessarily hazardous. Treating the entire house with an aerosol fogger is often a better option in this case since foggers are more easily able to reach hidden spiders that are difficult to find and spray with contact insecticides.
- Products marketed as spider repellents, either for inside the home or out, typically have a marginal effectiveness at best. Non-chemical spider removal methods not only are proven and more effective than chemical controls; they side-step all the deleterious health and environmental effects associated with using chemical control methods. Vacuum up any spiders or spider webs you see or trap spiders inside a jar so that they can be released outside. Controlling the population of insects on which the spiders feed inside the home can compel the spiders to leave in search of another food source.
- Preventative steps are always the best means for preventing a spider infestation inside the home. Fill any cracks in walls, doorways, door frames or any part of the home that could potentially serve as an entrance for outdoor spiders to come into the home. If possible, keep outdoor lighting away from windows and doors; lights attract insects which in turn attract hungry spiders. Simple cleanliness can go a long way in preventing spider infestations by preventing insects that serve as a food source for spiders from coming indoors.
