    Vinegar and Baking Soda

    • Vinegar is mostly comprised of aecetic acid with a ph as high as 3.5. Vinegar is strong enough alone to eat away rust from metal. However, when combined with baking soda, the reaction creates a more powerful formula that is able to eat through buildup. Begin with one ¼ cup of baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda down the drain. Next, pour one ½ cup of vinegar down the drain immediately after the baking soda. Close the drain with a stopper or cloth. You will also hear bubbling or fizzing. While the drain is bubbling, boil one gallon of hot water. After the bubbling is not apparent, pour the boiling water down the drain. The boiling water will release any remaining clogged material. Only use boiling water on metal pipes. Plastic plumbing pipes melt under extreme heat. If you have plastic plumbing pipes, use hot tap water instead of boiling water.

    Borax and Water

    • Borax is a natural deodorant with the ability to scour away dirt, germs, stuck on residue, and unclog drains. Boil one gallon of water. While the water is boiling, pour one cup of borax down the drain. If borax is not available, use washing soda like that of the Arm and Hammer brand washing soda. Immediately follow with the gallon of boiling water. This mixture is especially formulated for drains clogged with hair. Nevertheless, be careful when utilizing boiling water. Boiling water should only be used on metal pipes as plastic pipes melt under extreme heat.

    Salt and Water

    • Salt mixed with water has softening capabilities to break down grease and accumulated enzymes in food. Although salt and water has the ability to power through grease buildup, the solution can only yield light drain cleaning results. Begin with one ¼ cup of table salt or Epson salt. Next, follow up with 4 liters of hot to boiling water down the sink. You can opt to let the solution sit in the sink overnight or add light plunging to the sink to reinforce the solution down the drain.
