Danger! Weed Killer Damage

105 4
There may be some occasions when you find it is necessary to use weed killers in your garden. You should always be aware of the danger of accidental spraying onto other garden plants and follow safe procedures. When you are using a weed killer if it accidentally gets on to your plants hose it off immediately with plenty of fresh water. The sooner you can do this the less chance there is of damage affecting the condition of your plants.Sometimes while you are spraying in one part of the garden to deal with intractable weeds a breeze can carry the spray to plants in other areas. If you don't notice what is happening and take some steps to rectify it, only some time later will you find out the damage that has been done. You may find that some leaves have become smaller, narrowed and twisted or discoloured.Once this damage becomes apparent to you there is really nothing that can be done other than to carefully remove the damaged portions of the plant and hope that more damage will not come to light over the following days.In many cases, if you are fortunate, a plant will recover if only a minimal amount of poison, left over from the main spraying, has blown over with a breeze. The outcome depends very much on the quantity the plant was exposed to and how large, or how robust the plant is.There are plants that are much more susceptible to weed killer than others. Just a small amount of exposure to it will be enough to kill such a plant. You really must be extremely careful when you are using such poisons. You must do everything to ensure that none of it drifts across to areas where it is not intended to be applied. The old saying is true here, 'Prevention is better than Cure'.Be sure to only use weed killer on a windless day. The sprayer should be held close to the weeds so that the spray is concentrated on them and on nothing else. Of course, you will be sure to protect yourself as well, wearing goggles and a mouth and nose protector. It really is the wisest course to have dedicated containers for weed killer and any other sprays in the garden. If any residual weed killer is left in a container which you afterwards use for other purposes in the garden you could ruin your plants. If you find it is not possible to have one container for poison and another separate one for other garden sprays then you must always make absolutely sure that you clean it thoroughly after use and remove all traces of the poison. It should also be remembered that even if wearing gardening gloves you should wash your hands thoroughly to be on the safe side.
