How to Do a Plaited Braid

    • 1). Brush through the hair to remove tangles. Brush the hair in the direction you want the braid to hang.

    • 2). Separate the hair to be braided into three sections, A, B and C.

    • 3). Hold section A with the thumb and index finger of your left hand. Whenever you move a section of hair over another you will use your index finger and thumb to do so. Reserve the other hair in the other fingers. Over time, this process of rotating the sections of hair in your hands will move naturally.

    • 4). Hold section B with the thumb and index finger of your right hand.

    • 5). Cross A over the top of B, making the visual order of the sections B, A, C.

    • 6). Cross C over the top of A. The visual order of the sections is now B,C, A.

    • 7). Repeat the crossing pattern. The position of the hair when you began does not matter after you make the first two crosses. Think of the hair now in terms of left, middle, right. Cross the left-most section over the top of the middle section. Then, cross the right-most section over the middle section.

    • 8). Continue the crossing pattern -- left over middle, right over middle -- until you reach the end of the hair.

    • 9). Secure the braid by looping a hair elastic or ponytail holder repeatedly until it is tight.
