A simple garden features native plants that grow well in your area. You want to choose native plants, because non-native species may require more attention. The basic design of this garden is not difficult to set up, and is appropriate for people who want to dress up their landscape without a lot of work or complex landscape plans.

    Circular Herb Garden

    • Select a section of land in your backyard and plow a circle 7 feet in diameter. Till the ground 15 inches deep and add 6 to 7 inches of fertilizer or compost. This is especially important if you live in an area where the soil is sandy or clay-like. You can plant grass around the circle, or build a white picket fence to go around it. Plant various herbs such as lavender and rosemary. Be sure to choose non-invasive herbs. Use labeled garden sticks to identify each herb.

    Basic Walking Path Garden

    • If your home has a cement or dirt walking path that leads up to the front door, you can improve the exterior by planting flowers along the edge. Till the ground 10 inches or deeper to prepare the soil. Add at least 4 inches of compost or garden fertilizer to increase soil fertility. Plant the flowers along the outer edges of your walkway, next to the cement path. Choose native flowers in your region--flowers such as daisies, tulips and violets grow well in several areas across America. Some flowers will bloom throughout the majority of the year while others will only flourish in the spring or summer.

    Raised Bed Garden

    • Raised bed gardens are made with large wooden boxes that are raised off the ground. You can buy potting mix and blend it with soil and compost to create fertile dirt for your plants. Install raised beds along the border of your front or back yard, depending on the space available. Plant flowers or herbs in your raised beds. This simple garden works well in several states, especially colder states because plants raised off the ground are slightly warmer that plants that grow directly in the dirt.
