How to Clean a Velvet Material
- 1). Brush the velvet down with an upholstery brush specifically designed for velvet. This is useful even if you don't have a specific stain on the material, as it can help remove dust and dirt.
- 2). Attach a nozzle fixture to the front of your handheld vacuum that is specifically for velvet. You can purchase this attachment at upholstery shops.
- 3). Run the handheld vacuum across the velvet. This will help remove not just deeply embedded dust and dirt, but also remove parts of dried-on stains.
- 4). Fill a medium-sized jar with warm water. Add four to five drops of dish detergent. Screw the lid on the jar tightly and shake it vigorously until suds appear at the top of the jar.
- 5). Unscrew the jar and dip your soft cloth directly onto the soapy bubbles, not the water, getting the cloth just barely damp.
- 6). Dab at the stains with your barely damp and barely soapy soft cloth. Don't press down hard on the fabric and don't get the velvet too wet.
- 7). Press a dry cloth onto the velvet for big stains to blot the liquid out of the fabric. Do not press down hard, as you could easily implant the stain deeper into the fabric. Repeat steps four to six.
