How to Fix Basement Mold

    • 1). Remove all items from your basement that have mold growing.

    • 2). Launder washable items as you normally would, except add 1 cup of white vinegar into the water before you add the laundry detergent. Place hard surface items in a safe location in your yard and scrub with vinegar and water. Discard porous items--such as paper or cardboard--that have mold present.

    • 3). Fill a bucket with white vinegar. Submerge a scrub brush into the vinegar. Scrub all areas of the basement that have mold present, as well as the surrounding areas. For larger mold infestations, submerge a stiff-bristled brush broom into the vinegar and scrub walls and floors. Alternatively, mix equal parts water and bleach in a bucket. Add 1 tsp. of liquid dish soap and mix thoroughly. Scrub the mold with a scrub brush saturated in the mixture.

    • 4). Rinse the basement with a water hose. Direct the water toward the basement drain. Alternatively, fill a clean bucket with water. Submerge a cloth in the water and wipe the areas that you previously cleaned with the cloth.

    • 5). Provide the basement with good air circulation and ventilation. If possible, open all doors and windows in the basement. Place several fans in the basement and allow them to run until the basement is thoroughly dried.

    • 6). Allow UV lamps to run for 24 hours in your basement. Like sunlight, UV lamps will kill mold and its spores. Never leave UV lamps on while unattended--run them only when you will be home.

    • 7). Run a dehumidifier in your basement for several days. Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air. Without moisture, mold cannot grow. Using a dehumidifier will greatly reduce the amount of mold spores in your basement.
