As of April 1, 2006, New York is sales tax free all year long for clothing, footwear and items used to make or repair clothing. Dollar limits only apply to New York City.

Neighbor state Connecticut also has a sales tax holiday.

Clothing Exempt from New York Sales Tax


Only clothing costing more than $110 per item in New York City is subject to the 4% tax rate. All other clothing sales are tax free, including:
  • Aerobic Clothing
  • Arm Warmers
  • Athletic Supporters
  • Athletic or Sport Uniforms or Clothing
  • Baby Bibs
  • Bandannas
  • Bathing Suits
  • Belt Buckles
  • Belts and Suspenders
  • Blouses
  • Caps and Hats
  • Coats and Wraps
  • Coveralls
  • Diapers (adult and baby, cloth and disposable)
  • Dresses
  • Ear Muffs
  • Formal Clothing (not rented)
  • Gloves (batting, bicycle, dress, garden, golf, ski, tennis and work)
  • Gym, Jogging and Sweat Suits
  • Hand Muffs
  • Handkerchiefs
  • Hosiery
  • Jeans
  • Leg Warmers
  • Leotards
  • Neckwear
  • Rain Wear
  • Scout Uniforms
  • Shirts

Footwear Exempt from New York Sales Tax

Shoes must be less than $110 to be exempt from sales tax in New York City. All other footwear sales are tax free for:
  • Ballet Shoes
  • Bicycle Shoes
  • Books (climbing, fishing, riding ski, waders)
  • Cleats
  • Golf Shoes
  • Jazz/Dance Shoes
  • Slippers
  • Sneakers
  • Track Shoes

Taxable Items


Athletic equipment, barrettes, bobby pins, costumes, hair bows helmets, nonprescription sunglasses, umbrellas and watches are types of items that are always taxable.
