Zuzu Plant Care

    Water Properly

    • Water your Zuzu plant frequently. Plant owners often think that because the Zuzu is found in the deserts of Africa, it can withstand long periods of drought. While the Zuzu can indeed withstand long, dry periods, it will not thrive and may even go into a dormant state, dropping its leaves. Instead, keep the soil of your Zuzu plant moist, but not soggy. Water the plant every other day in the summer, and every two or three days in the winter. The key to watering it properly, however, is making sure your Zuzu plant has the right kind of soil: well-draining. A planting medium that contains at least 50 percent sand, perlite or peat moss is good, or even orchid bark. Many commercial planting soils for tropical plants such as the Zamoiculcas zamiifolia are marked "moisture control." If the soil does not drain well, the plant will suffer and decline.

    Provide Light and Heat

    • Give your Zuzu plant light and plenty of heat. This tropical plant cannot tolerate cold conditions. The Zuzu should only be planted outdoors if you live in a tropical or subtropical climate. Indoors, keep the plant away from cool drafts and keep the temperature well above freezing. While the Zuzu plant can tolerate low-light levels, it will perform better with some exposure to daily sunlight. Do not place it in bright, direct sunlight, however, as this can burn the leaves. A morning-facing window, for example, will have less intense rays than an afternoon window. Or, place the Zuzu plant near a filtered light source, such as a tinted window.

    Monitor Your Zuzu

    • Monitor your Zuzu plant for signs of sickness. While it is not bothered by insect pests, the plant can develop tuber rot if left in standing water. Dust off the leaves periodically, but do not use a leaf shine. Finally, keep pets and young children away from the plant, especially if you grow it as a houseplant---because all parts of the Zamioculcas zamiifolia are poisonous.
