    • 1). Chop the glycerin soap base into 1/2-inch cubes with a sharp knife. Fill the bottom half of your double boiler halfway with water. Fit the top into the bottom and place the boiler over medium-low heat. Add the glycerin pieces to the top compartment..

    • 2). Melt the glycerin slowly, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. When the glycerin is totally and evenly melted, add enough colorant so the color is a little lighter than your desired shade. The soap will harden and dry darker than the liquid in the boiler.

    • 3). Add about 3 drops of each essential oil for every 8 ounces of glycerin you use. For instance, if you melted a pound of glycerin, you need 6 drops of each oil. Lavender, chamomile and eucalyptus are soothing scents. Peppermint relaxes and promotes alertness. You can also mix in a little vanilla and apple spice for a seasonal scent.

    • 4). Pour the mixed soap into your molds. Let the soap harden for 48 hours. Flip the molds over and pop the soaps free by pushing your thumbs into the back of each mold. Wrap the soaps in plastic wrap for sale or future use.
