How to Estimate a Block Fence

    • 1). Determine the length of your proposed fence. Use a measuring tape to measure off distances along the borders of your yard where you plan for the fence to go.

    • 2). Decide on the height of your fence.

    • 3). Multiply the length by the height to determine the vertical area your fence will cover.

    • 4). Multiply the length and height of a single block that is the size of the blocks you are considering for your project.

    • 5). Divide the vertical area that you calculated in step 3 by the block area you calculated in step 4 to get an estimate of the number of blocks you will need for your fence.

    • 6). Refine your materials estimate by determining how many post blocks you will need. Soil types, common wind conditions and fence height can affect the post spacing, so without calling a contractor to discuss your specific needs you can get a rough estimate at best.

    • 7). Divide the length of your proposed fence by 17 feet, which is an average figure for post spacing. That is an estimate of the number of posts you will need in your fence.

    • 8). Multiply the number of posts by the number of blocks you plan to use to build a single post to estimate the number of post blocks you'll need.

    • 9). Subtract the number of post blocks you calculated in step 8 from the total number of fence blocks you calculated in step 5 to further refine your estimate of how many fence blocks you need. Keep in mind that your post blocks and fence blocks may be different sizes, so this number may not be exact; but it will be a good overall estimate of materials, which will help you to figure the cost.
