Survey of Beliefs, Doctrine and Practices

In school when people want to get a general overview of a subject, they enroll in what is called a survey course. Survey courses are generally introductory courses. This means that you get a broad introduction to all aspects of the subject.

If you have no knowledge, or limited knowledge, of LDS beliefs and doctrine; the sites above can give you a solid introduction. This introduction can serve as a foundation on which you can build.

Also, you can think of it as a framework. For example, when putting puzzles together, it usually helps to find all the perimeter pieces and put them together; so that you have a framework to fill in. Once the framework is complete, you can more easily see how the rest of the puzzle pieces fit together.

If you do not have a framework, or foundation, you may even feel that a puzzle piece does not fit, or that it belongs to a different puzzle entirely.

It also helps to have a foundation or framework before you put some aspect of it under a microscope. Only by understanding the whole, can you understand the pieces.

It is the same with the gospel. It does not take long to establish a framework or obtain a foundation, but it is a crucial first step.
