How to Keep Silverplate From Tarnishing
- 1). Avoid over-polishing. If you over-polish silverplate, you may remove the silver and even reach the base or underlying metal. The best way to adequately polish silverplate is to simply stop polishing when the finish is shiny and gleams.
- 2). Wipe the silver-plated object with a cotton cloth before washing. The cloth removes all dust. Dust can scratch the surface of silverplate.
- 3). Wash silver-plated objects by hand, never in a dishwasher. Do not wear latex gloves because the latex can lead to tarnishing. Use a mild, phosphate-free dishwashing soap that does not have lemon or another type of citrus as an ingredient. Citrus can tarnish silverplate. Wash silver-plated objects alone, not with other metals.
- 4). Rinse the silverplate in warm water to remove all soap residue.
- 5). Dry the silverplate with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- 6). Store all silver-plated objects in a storage case lined with silver cloth. Silver cloth has tiny particles of silver within the cloth that absorb tarnish-producing elements.
