How to Withstand Loneliness According to the Bible
- 1). Study the Bible's promises to those who are lonely. One such verse is John 14:18, which records the promise made by Jesus to his disciples, "I will not leave you comfortless." Another is the promise made by Moses in appointing Joshua to be his successor, telling the people to be strong and courageous because the Lord will not leave or forsake them. Psalm 27:10 expresses the human conviction that God will care for the lonely: "Though my father and mother forsake me / the Lord will receive me."
- 2). Turn to God in prayer. The teachings of scripture mean that those who bring their loneliness to God will find comfort. Themes of such prayers include the desire for companionship, protection from temptation to despair, and gratitude for God's constancy and faithfulness.
- 3). Reach out to a spiritual community. This could be a church, a recovery group, a Bible study or any kind of group that connects you to God. Be honest about where your spiritual journey has led you, and express your desire to be part of a community. Get involved and help others who are seeking comfort from loneliness.
