How to Dress a Surface Grinder

    • 1). Don a pair of rubber gloves. Clean the surface grinder's table and the bottom of the diamond dresser you'll be using with acetone. Wipe both surfaces dry afterward.

    • 2). Lower the table to create clearance between the table and the wheel. Activate the table's magnetic chuck.

    • 3). Lock the diamond dresser to the center of the table, with the sharp end pointed upward. Check that the dresser is securely magnetized to the table.

    • 4). Adjust the table until only a small gap lies between the tip of the dressing tool and the center of the wheel's lowest point. Adjust the coolant nozzle to spray the contact point.

    • 5). Turn on the grinding wheel and allow it to reach full speed. Activate the coolant system.

    • 6). Raise the table slowly until you hear the dressing stick and the wheel come into contact. Watch for dust to shoot away from the contact point.

    • 7). Move the table back and forth along the machine's Y-axis, moving the dressing stick towards and away from you. Allow the diamond dresser to pass slightly beyond the edge of the wheel when it reaches the end. Raise the table by 0.0005 inch to 0.001 inch each time the dressing tool passes fully across the wheel's face, depending on the material used to make the grinding wheel.

    • 8). Pass the dressing tool fully across the wheel face three or four times, then examine the wheel for cleanliness and sharp edges. The grinding edge of a fully dressed wheel will look new again, whereas patches of worn diamond appear glazed over. Continue dressing the wheel until its edges and face are both cleaned.
