How to Install a Horizontal Dryer Vent

    • 1). Locate where you want the dryer vent to penetrate your exterior wall. Drill a 1/4-inch hole from the inside out to mark the location.

    • 2). Go outside, and locate the drilled hole. If it's in a suitable location, drill a 4 1/4-inch hole through the wall with your hole saw.

    • 3). Slide the pipe stub of your dryer vent hood into the hole, and push it in until the dryer vent hood is tight to the wall. Level and secure it to the wall with screws.

    • 4). Caulk around the dryer vent hood with silicone caulk to prevent water infiltration.

    • 5). Go inside, and install the dryer vent pipe from the dryer to the pipe stub on the dryer vent hood. Connect each piece of dryer vent pipe together by sliding the crimped end of one joint 1 1/2 inches into the non-crimped end of another joint. Tape the seam with 3-inch foil aluminum tape to secure it.

    • 6). Install elbows where necessary to make turns. The elbows will have a non-crimped end and a crimped end, and they are installed in the same fashion as the pipe. Cut the pipe down as necessary with your snips, and use your pipe crimper to crimp one end.

    • 7). Support horizontal runs over 5 feet in length with a galvanized hanger strap. Screw one end of the strap to a ceiling joist, wrap it around the pipe, and screw the other end to another ceiling joist. Your pipe will be cradled in a hanger that looks like the letter "U."
