While there are certain colors for funeral flower arrangements that have long been considered appropriate, many times people no longer adhere to tradition. Straying from tradition can be acceptable. Yet, the color of flowers you send should depend on your relationship to the deceased and your knowledge of the family. - Red or white flowers such as roses lilies or carnations are traditional choices for sympathy flowers. Red symbolizes strength and courage in a sympathy flower, while white represents modesty and elegance. Blue flowers, representing peace and serenity, are also used occasionally in traditional flower arrangements.
- Contemporary flower color choices can include pink, purple or yellow flowers to brighten an arrangement and offer an alternative to traditional colors. Used sparingly, these colors can be a tasteful incorporation. Tell your florist what you desire and he can likely create something for you that will be appropriate.
- If you happen to know the deceased person's favorite flower and color, you can send an arrangement that incorporates that particular flower. Some families who are ultra-conservative and who value traditions may not react well to this approach, so use your best judgment or ask the advice of your florist.
