Instructions for Filing a 1040A
- 1). Obtain Form 1040A from the Internal Revenue Service Web site and print a copy to fill out (see Resources). If you'd rather file electronically, choose from one of the Internal Revenue Service's approved electronic tax preparation companies and click on the name of the one you'd like to use and follow the instructions provided (see Resources).
- 2). Enter your personal information, income information, adjusted gross income and your tax, credit and payment information onto Form 1040A. Instructions are available for Form 1040A to assist you in filling out the form. For those filing electronically, the electronic tax prep company you are using will guide you through each section one line at a time, with prompts.
- 3). Check for mistakes. Electronic filers should print a copy for their records before clicking "Submit" and sending their 1040A to the Internal Revenue Service. Paper filers should sign and date the bottom of page two of Form 1040A, attach copies of their W2s and other forms that have any federal withholding listed and mail to the appropriate Internal Revenue Service office. Taxpayers in each state mail their returns to a different address. The correct address for your state is listed on the Form 1040A Instructions (see Resources).
