How to Save Butternut Squash Seeds
- 1). You want to start with an excellent heirloom variety squash, the people's choice here is Waltham Butternut Squash. Be sure that the squash you have selected to take seeds from has been allowed to grow to maturity. This will help ensure you will end up with healthy, robust seeds.
- 2). First peel the outer layer off of the squash with a vegetable peeler. This is the same thing you use to peel carrots.
- 3
Next, cut the squash from top to bottom down the middle. When you separate into two halves, the seeds will become visible. - 4). Scoop out the seeds with a spoon onto a paper towel. Try to take out any chunks of squash that come along with the seeds. Spread them out in a single layer and allow to dry for 3-4 days in a cool, dry place. Turn the seeds over every day or two to help them dry.
- 5). Once your seeds have dried out, store them in a paper envelope and place the envelope in the refrigerator or freezer to help maximize their shelf life. Your seeds can stay viable for years by doing this.
- 6). Next spring, take out your heirloom Waltham Butternut Squash seeds that you saved from your favorite plant last year and get working on your vegetable garden!
