Teaching Tricks is Fun and Will Enhance Your Dog"s Training Skills

I really enjoy teaching my dogs tricks.
Rocky, our Border collie x, knows lots of different tricks and he's clicker trained.
He's clever and he knows it.
And he loves to show off his skills for any body at any time.
I enjoy teaching him tricks too but not because I enjoy seeing my best friend perform like a circus monkey.
I know that he enjoys showing me how clever he is and what he can actually do.
Rocky's eyes literally shine with excitement when we are practising his tricks.
He certainly doesn't have the same look of joy when he's doing his obedience drills! Assistance dog training and Seeing Eye dog training are really advanced trick training programs.
It's about taking the dog's learning to a higher level to extend its mind and physical abilities so it can assist people with disabilities to live a more fulfilling life.
What greater role can any animal play? Types of tricks include play dead, spin around to the left and then the right, shake, obeying an 'eat' command and rolling over.
These tricks usually take a week or so to teach and then several weeks or months to train and proof.
The amount of time it takes to teach a dog any trick can depend upon the amount of time you have, the age and prior learning of the dog.
You shouldn't train for more than ten minutes at a time.
If you can train for several sessions a day all the better, but don't make the individual sessions too long.
Once your dog has learnt how to learn, it will advance through a series of different tricks quicker.
More complex skills involve picking up dropped keys and returning them to the owner, turning on or off lights, picking up a ringing phone and giving it to its owner, riding a skateboard or getting a drink out of the fridge and giving it to its owner and then going back to close the fridge.
These sorts of tricks are taught by chaining a series of smaller tricks together.
There is as much skill needed by the trainer as there is by the dog to complete these tricks and it can take several months to train successfully if at all.
Trick training is a time for fun and bonding with your dog.
The time you spend with your dog is invaluable.
Always end your training sessions on a high and always 'jack pot' when your dog gets it perfect! This means to go overboard with the praise and pats and give two or more treats.
Don't be tempted to give one big treat.
Your dog doesn't understand size but it does understand amounts and two or more small treats means more than one large one.
Don't punish your dog if it doesn't do what you have asked.
Don't reward unless you are completely satisfied with your dog's performance.
My dogs are not punished or yelled at.
If they don't do as I ask them they simply don't get the reward.
Always give your dog the opportunity to correct its behaviour and get it right.
Trust me your dog wants to please you and by being patient you will build a much more meaningful relationship with your dog based on trust and respect.
