    • 1). Watch for commitment issues as a sign of emotional abuse in a relationship. If you are dating someone who is dating others, married, living with another person, and does not want to see you often, you are dating an emotionally unhealthy person.

    • 2). Look for signs of extreme selfishness. If the person you are dating does not want to plan holidays with you or only talks about his or her own needs, he or she is revealing signs of emotional abuse in a relationship.

    • 3). Watch for signs of financial instability. A partner who takes your money, uses your credit, and threatens you financially is revealing signs of emotional abuse in a relationship. A person who doesn't work, exploits your resources, finds faults with you, then tries to convince you that you are the one who is crazy is showing signs of immaturity, abuse, and red-flag warnings of emotional abuse in a relationship.

    • 4). Look for signs of verbal and non-verbal emotional abuse. If the person does not say he or she loves you, doesn't compliment you, doesn't call you, puts you down, and doesn't ask about your needs, there is emotional abuse in the relationship.

    • 5). Watch for signs of dishonesty. If you are with someone who lies and who is untrustworthy, you are in an unhealthy and emotionally abusive relationship.

    • 6). Look for any signs of addiction. People who are active addicts of any kind are not emotionally available for a healthy relationship.
