You will also need a free space to run an exhaust duct.
Most Exhaust ducts are located in the roof or side of the home.

The first thing you want to do is turn the circuit to your bathroom off.
You do not want any electricity on at this point.
Once you have set up the exhaust and cut into your electrical line you will create a box for the fan.
Depending on the size of your fan you will need to cut away an area exposing half of the ceiling joist edges.
This gives you space to screw in the new piece.
Cut your new piece of green board to fit the area.
Then cut out the fan opening to see if it fits.
You will more than likely have to trim a few times to get the desired size.
Install the green board with 1 5/8" drywall screws.
Your fan should now be in place.
You will want to place the screws along the sides of the fan to secure it.
Using your compound and tape, fill the joints so that they are not visible.
Place the bulb of your choice into your fan, place the cover on and turn your circuit to the bathroom back on.
Congratulate yourself for a job well done.
Installing a bathroom fan may take a little bit of time, but in regards to the benefits of having a fan, it is well worth the time and energy spent.
