Ambiance
In stark contrast to many of Williamsburg's overcrowded and pub-like restaurants, Le Comptoir remains trendy but is undeniably elegant with a calming atmosphere.
The name refers to the large counter bar which takes up most of the front of the restaurant. Inside you'll find modern looking chandeliers, with a seating area near the front in the event that there's a wait for a table. Or dine at the bar if you're in the mood for a more casual meal. In the warmer months the garden is the prime seating spot, especially for brunch. The host and chef are both French, giving the dining experience an authentic feel.
Cuisine
Le Comptoir serves fairly straightforward French cuisine with a few twists. Popular dishes include the mussels and chorizo (the chorizo being the twist here, for $7), the braised short rib which is served over parmesan risotto ($15), and the foie gras creme brulee ($8). Dishes are organized on the menu according to meat rather than size, so feel free to ask the waiter which ones to order for a full meal. The short rib, though, for $15, is very rich and a nice price.
Brunch
For brunch there is a special prix fixe for $20.11 for your choice off the menu and endless Bloody Marys or mimosas.
If you are a person who likes a boozy brunch, you can't get a better deal. Food highlights include the eggs Benedict served with your choice of Canadian bacon or smoked salmon for $14, or the French toast "creme brulee" for $10.
Specials and Happy Hour
Every night from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. all oysters are $1 at Le Comptoir, or choose a glass of wine and get three oysters for $10. Other happy hour drink specials are available at the bar as well.
On Monday nights, Le Comptoir does a barbeque and rose night, where you can eat what you like for $20. You have a choice of barbeque ribs, merguez, or chicken, with sides like potato salad, cucumber and feta salad, or tomatoes and pesto.
Nearby
If French cuisine just isn't up your alley, amble over to Caracas, just down the street, for traditional Venezuelan food. Another option in the same direction is Walter Foods, with one of the best burgers in town. Just down Havemeyer and over to the left on Metropolitan you'll find Custom American Wine Bar if you're in need of after dinner drinks. Or, if you're looking to catch a band, try Bruar Falls, directly down the street on Grand.
