How to Install a Fan Remote
- 1). Set your ceiling fan motor on high and turn on the ceiling fan lights.
- 2). Turn off the electrical circuit to the ceiling fan by turning off the breaker at the main electrical panel.
- 3). Remove the ceiling fan canopy from the hanging bracket at the ceiling. The canopy is held on by two or more screws.
- 4). Disconnect the fan wires at the electrical box in the ceiling. Untwist the wire connector holding the white wires together and untwist the connector holding the black wire from the power supply to the black wire and light kit wire from the ceiling fan.
- 5). Identify the wires on the remote receiver. There are several brands of ceiling fan remote controls on the market and each one is connected between the power supply and the ceiling fan. Each one has a different size and a different shape. However, all have total of five wires: two black wires, two white wires, and a lit kit wire. Be familiar with the wires on the remote receiver that you are installing. Know which set of wires connect to the power supply and which set of wires will connect to the fan.
- 6). Wire the remote receiver to the ceiling fan. Connect the power supply side of the remote receiver to the power supply wires. Connect the black wire from the receiver to the black wire from the power supply by twisting an orange wire connector to the two wires. Connect the two white wires as you connected the black wires. Connect the ceiling fan side of the remote receiver to the ceiling fan wires. Connect the black wire from the receiver to the black wire from the ceiling fan by twisting an orange wire connector onto the two wires. Connect the white wire from the ceiling fan to the white wire from the remote receiver with an orange wire connector and connect the light kit wire from the ceiling fan to the light kit wire from the remote receiver with the wire connector. Each brand of ceiling fans and remote controls has different color wires for the light kit, but the wires will be labeled as the light kit wires.
- 7). Replace the ceiling fan canopy and turn the breaker back on at the main electrical panel.
