How to Throw a Throwing Knife
- 1). Set up a throwing area and target. Throw in an open area, one with no foot traffic from bystanders, and ensure that other people around you are standing at least 3 feet behind you. Make sure there are no breakable items near your target or hard metal surfaces that your knife may rebound off of. Your target should be made of a material that your knife can easily stick in but is not so soft that the knife will pass through it, such as a sheet of chip board.
- 2). Warm up your arms and hands. Stretch and shake your arms (this is important to avoid muscle injury), and flex and rub your fingers.
- 3). Adopt a proper stance. Place your secondary foot forward and your primary foot about a foot and a half back. From this stance, you will step forward with your primary foot as you throw. If this stance doesn't work for you, feel free to adjust it or switch the positioning of your feet.
- 4). Hold the throwing knife correctly. There are many different styles of grip for throwing, but one of the easiest to start with is a pinch grip; hold the knife at the blade a couple inches in (not at the very tip) in your primary hand. Grip the knife as you would hold a small card flat in front of you. Hold the blade securely, but do not grip overly tightly. You should be able to shake the blade without having it fall from your hand.
- 5). Cock your throwing arm and prepare to throw. Hold your arm, with the knife, straight out in front of you, then bend your elbow to hold the knife straight behind and below your shoulder. Keep your arm aligned straight and don't let your elbow jut out to the side.
- 6). Throw the knife. Bring your arm forward while stepping forward and release the knife when it is at eye level, focusing on the location of the target.
