How to Paint Morning Scenes

    • 1). Find a photograph of a morning scene to use as a reference. Take a photograph of your house or yard, or use a photo from a vacation you took years ago. Morning light helps locations have serenity, which is what you will capture through your painting, so choose an image that you like.

    • 2). Sketch out a rough idea for your painting onto paper, and use the reference photo if you need help. Erase anything you don't like in order to get the image perfect. Once you have finished, sketch your drawing onto canvas. Use the reference photo to help you plan out the most difficult element of your painting, the light. Sketch in the areas that will be highlighted and then those that will appear in shadow. You may even want to mark these areas with a small "H," for highlights, and "S," for shadow, so that you don't get confused.

    • 3). Lay the plastic sheet over your workspace so that you protect the surface of the table or counter where you are working. Place all of your materials on top of the sheet so they are easy to access.

    • 4). Squirt acrylic paint onto the palette. Start applying paint to the canvas in small sections. Because acrylics dry quickly, you can easily go back and add more paint for deeper color or increased texture. Paint in the darkest areas first, like those that are in the shadows. The lightest areas, those that are highlighted by the sunlight, will come next. The light may cause objects to appear white, but add a little bit of yellow or orange paint to the area so that it appears more realistic. Let paint dry completely before adding more layers.

    • 5). Hang your canvas somewhere in your house so that you can easily see your morning scene painting.
